Venezuela’s National Assembly elects its executive for 2025-2026 period

President of the National Assembly of Venezuela Jorge Rodriguez said the time has come to reach an agreement to isolate fascists and their actions.

The National Assembly of Venezuela installed the national parliament for the 2025-2026 legislative period in a session held Sunday, respecting provisions of the Constitution.

A new executive board was elected by clear majority and sworn in to the executive of the body: Jorge Rodríguez as president, Pedro Infante as vice president and América Pérez as second vice president.

The Assembly reiterated the invitation to Nicolás Maduro Moros to take office on January 10, 2025, as part of the first act of the parliament. President Maduro was reelected as President of the Bolivarian Republic on July 28, 2025.

The session was accompanied by people on the exterior of the congress, who were seen holding and wearing portraits and images of Hugo Chávez and President Maduro.

In relation to the threats of sabotage to the presidential inauguration, Rodriguez said that the body is “obliged to contribute so that the law is applied against [opposition figure] Edmundo González, if he sets foot in the national territory, for treason and usurpation of power,” adding that “the time has come reach an agreement to isolate fascist actions”.

Rodriguez also announced that he will request to decree as persona non grata in the country all those who threaten the peace of Venezuela.

Edmundo González has widely publicized his intention to return to the country, despite having abandoned Venezuela for Spain in September, where he was granted asylum.

González, who has received the endorsement of Washington and European allies, says he will take office on January 10 as “Constitutional President” of Venezuela, despite having been defeated in the July 28 elections by president Nicolás Maduro—mirroring the actions of Juan Guaido in 2019.

In recent days, the former presidential candidate, along with far-right opposition leader María Corina Machado, made social media appeals to the military, calling for a coup and encouraging supporters to carry out acts aimed at destabilizing the country in the coming days.

González is expected to make an appearance on Monday in Washington DC, at the headquarters of the Organization of American States, following a visit to Argentina where he met with President Javier Milei, and a stop in Uruguay where we was received by right-wing outgoing president, Luis Lacalle Pou.

Official diplomatic representation from around the region and world will be attending the inauguration of President Maduro on Friday. Caracas will also host hundreds of international guests from all continents for the World Festival of the Anti-Fascist International from January 9-11.
