Latin America reacts to Syria

Latin American governments express solidarity with the people of Syria and demand respect for the country's territorial integrity.

Latin American governments and political leaders have issued statements in solidarity with the people of Syria, calling for respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence amid the collapse of the country at the hands of terrorist and extremist groups and amid the seizure of Syrian land by Israel. The following is a selection of excerpts of statements issued by important actors in the region.

Venezuela

Venezuela reiterates its commitment to the preservation of the territorial unity of Syria, as well as, the defense of its sovereignty, independence and absolute respect for the values enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, with special emphasis on the preservation of civil, political and human rights of its entire population, without distinction of any kind. This includes the protection and peaceful coexistence of the diverse religious, cultural and ethnic expressions that enrich the identity of that country, Cradle of Civilizations.

Nicaragua

We call in general, for Respect and Non-Interference, focusing on the Wisdom of the Peoples, who, as they do in Syria, live their millenary culture, and therefore, we are sure they will be able to find their own way, making their own decisions, in the maturity and knowledge that characterizes them.

Cuba

We strongly call for the preservation of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria as well as respect for the integrity and security of diplomatic missions based in that Arab nation.

Brazil

Brazil reiterates the need for full respect for international law, including international humanitarian law, as well as for Syria’s territorial integrity and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. Brazil supports efforts for a political, negotiated solution to the conflict in Syria, that respects the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of Cuba

We are concerned about the events that have occurred in this nation. We call for the preservation of Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, as well as the security of the diplomatic missions based there.

Evo Morales, Former President of Bolivia

The situation that the people of Syria are going through is unfortunate. Once again, a military campaign is being launched from the West to overthrow a government that doesn’t align with their agendas. They were once called “terrorists,” now they are called “rebels.” The governments that finance them only want their natural resources.

Bruno Rodriguez, Foreign Minister of Cuba

We condemn the occupation by the Israeli Army of the demilitarized zone in the occupied Syrian Golan, established in the 1974 Separation Agreement, sponsored by the UN, in flagrant violation of International Law

ALBA-TCP

The Member States of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) express their solidarity with Syria, as well as express their categorical rejection and condemn the violent events reported in Aleppo and other areas of the country, promoted by terrorist groups seeking to attack the constitutional government of President Bashar Al Assad.

The Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter (members include Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Bolivia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines)

The Member States of the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter express their unwavering support for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, as well as its legitimate right to combat international terrorism.

They also reaffirm their unwavering solidarity and full support for the efforts of the Syrian government to liberate its territory from the threats posed by terrorist groups and to re-establish both State authority and the rule of law throughout its territory.
